Global Electronic Simulacra
In Vinyl Leaves, Stephen Fjellman’s compelling book about Walt Disney World, the author describes with wonder the rides and shops there as simulacra - “shells covered both inside and out with symbolic architecture and design.” Disney attendees are described as both pilgrims and tourists, where “the activity of touring includes leaving home to travel and experience at least the illusion of being somewhere else.” What is fake and what is real? In today’s world it doesn’t much matter anymore. The fake is real. As consumers are we getting the copy or the original? Or the copy of something that never existed?
The explosion of the Internet over the past ten years has provided new ways for people to be tourists from their own homes (or global Internet cafes). Even more recently, Google Maps, MySpace, and YouTube, just to name a few, have opened up new worlds of possibilities for instant tourism and expression without boundaries. What are the possibilities and consequences of all this? Now anyone from any culture can be a cultural imperialist, colonizing wherever they may. The questions are endless, but for now, let’s ask: What do you get when you combine Polish and Spanish? Is English still English when it appears in a song and doesn’t much resemble English to native English speakers but has a resonance with second language learners who may be able to relate to this language in a symbolic way that native speakers can’t completely understand?
The Musical Tourist: From Poland to the World
For many years known as Wojt3k, the enigmatic mik.musik.!. label head, graphic designer (”thesigner”) and veteran of Molr Drammaz and countless other music projects produced this, his second full length release as The Complainer (TC), in a period of desperation. Facing a particularly rough time in his personal life, the wildly prolific artist and Poland-based Renaissance man was struggling just to make it through the basic rigors of each day. Through it all he came up with an album he says will be hard to surpass.
What kind of music did this produce? Somewhat unexpectedly for aficionados of his label, it’s a global pop tour de force. For all its quirks, the overriding sonic theme is that of global simulacra (i.e. Disney World-ish) musical landscapes orchestrated with sincerity and desperation, like a sentimental trip around the world with 30 days left to live. These are the sounds of our times, sung in the colonial international language of English, peppered with his native Polish and touching on many of the world’s most popular and obscure languages (check out the “Spanish” of “Oigame Compay”). Overall, the words serve more as texture than anything - and many of the most moving words aren’t in any recognizable language. Molrian, the “fake” language of the land called Molr, a “country” invented by Wojt3k at the infancy of his musical explorations, also makes an indelible appearance here. Somehow it all makes sense. The non-language describes the world better than any “real” one.
Wojciech, as he prefers to be called now, invited many guests from all over the world to collaborate on the album (only participants from Antarctica are missing). “Each contributor brought something unique and genuine. Even if only one word was given, it was always said with significance.” Some collaborators prepared long vocal or instrumental parts, which he has described as “amazing and heartshaking.”
Cut and Paste but Glued Tight
So what’s it like? One way to describe having listened to the album is how you feel after you’ve left EPCOT for a long day. Inspired. Exhausted. Not exactly sure exactly where you were or what happened. Did we visit other countries? Was that real? Fake? Corporately controlled? Whatever. It doesn’t make a difference. The beats often sound clinically manufactured (indeed culled from various samples and sources) and non-sequitur lyrics are matched in number only by the non-sequitur sounds. Still, any alien from any planet (including Earth) would still recognize it as a pop album. As Stanley Kubrick would say, the truth is the “feel” of it rather than the “think” of it. And just like Disney World should be seen as a museum of contemporary American culture, THE COMPLAINER & THE COMPLAINERS should be seen as a soundtrack to our (global) times, or, at least, a soundtrack to some of its rides.

I AM SO ALIVE – “About life and being alive.” Country Bear Jamboree meets Tomorrowland.
I WILL FOLLOW – “How it is hard to be lonesome”
ANIMULAE – “About the time we have left and why we don't have time anymore.” Guests - USONIA from NYC sings with his gospel choir and URKUMA from Italy is talking (in electro-Latin) about difficulties and a nice target.
IT'S NOT CRIME – “Being selfish is not a crime. Sometimes this is the only way to survive the daily voodoo.”
BUBUNE – “Energy is the base for every creature, the biggest and the smallest.” Sung here in “Molrian”, one of the most energetic languages in the world. The Middle East, Africa, hardcore, flamenco, techno, Bach, Beethoven, antijazz and other anarchies are all found here. Features ASI MINA on classic guitar, and 8rolek provides some meaty techno.
LOVESEXY ORQUESTA PT 1 OR 2 – “Love is beauty and fear.” A real orgy of guests here - about 30 people from various countries- gave their vocal contributions in their own tongues- sometimes long, sometimes short, like in love and sex. BARTOSZ WEBER (Baaba) provides funky guitar solo. All parts are dedicated to Prince and - like singing in the rain at the Super Bowl – it’s sexy!
AGE17 (AGE37) – “Life passes quickly. Black hair - white hair, nothing in-between.”
SPRING [TECH (ANTI-DOG LEAGUE)] – “How dogs can destroy life and how
Spring can save life, not the opposite. At least not for Wojciech.” Joyful and light on the surface but with underlying tragic undertones.
¡OÍGAME COMPAY! (listen friend) – “About revolution, whatever it
is.” Special guests PSYCHOCUKIER give maximum heat and smoke.
FOLIO – “The biggest desperation, the biggest bigness, the grandest happiness
and the greatest sadness.” BARTEK MAGNETO (Starzy Singers, rumors say also Mitch & Mitch) appears on the guitar “like a thunderbolt prophesying apocalypse from the tall sky full of light.”
ZMIANA KOSTIUMU (change of the costume) (BOOOK) – “Read books. You will stay tall, won't drink milk, and give peace a chance. “
AMOR SENSUAL (BY TOMATES ASESINOS) – Love Sexy trilogy continued along with help from The Complainer’s new friends from Argentina.
RIA! (MYSPACE-ROCK) – “About good and bad sides of Internet life. Is it my space? Music is a fire here.” FELIX KUBIN explodes passages on his good 'ol Korg. It rocks!
